Polytechnic higher education institutions: research, innovation and education at risk

ACADIGIA project: With great power comes great responsibility

28 OCTOBER 2021

IFEMA, FERIA DE MADRID • MADRID, SPAIN

The technical higher educational landscape in Europe is currently in a process of transformation in which the model and role of European universities is being rethought. Last month, UPM (Universidad Politécnia de Madrid) had the opportunity to present at the World ATM Congress how academics, researchers and students are trying to solve this challenge through digital readiness and research, and innovation for society.

On one side Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are call to play a very significant role in the development of their regions of influence, due to their contribution to both intellectual and civic progress. To contribute to this goal, technical universities must play a leadership role in problem solving, in addition to serving as a model of civic behaviour for society.

On the other hand, HEis must be resistant to new and unthinkable threats. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that deeper cooperation across borders, disciplines and cultures is the only way to recover from the crisis and build resilience. And at the same time, these new threats may also facilitate a paradigm shift in conventional higher education.

Universidad Politécnica de Madrid presented how technical higher education institutions in Europe are preparing themselves for the new challenges in technical higher education through the participation in ERASMUS+ projects that pretend to change the way universities will accelerate their digital readiness and integrate into the society.

Participants were invited to learn about the AGADIGIA project and its objectives. ACADIGIA (Accelerating aCAdemia´s DIGItal readiness for online and blended Augmented teaching) is an international project which aims to accelerate the digital preparation of polytechnic higher education institutions towards the sustainable adoption of several online and mixed learning approaches. It builds upon common and recent experiences and pretends to create a strong mentoring system to transforms HEI’s staff into high-tech educators.

Over the course of two hours, the participants shared, discussed and reflected on the lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic and what education should be like in the post-pandemic era.

World ATM Congress is the world’s largest international air traffic management (ATM) exhibition and conference attracting over 6,000 registrants during this 2021 recovery year.
